Fire on Kilimanjaro: the latest

Wednesday October 4th 2006

According to reports coming out of Tanzania, the fire that raged at the start of September in the north-eastern corner of Kilimanjaro took ten days to extinguish and resulted in a loss of some 10 square kilometres of vegetation. Kilimanjaro’s chief warden, Nyamakumbati Mafuru, blamed poachers for the fire, though honey collectors (who set fire to the trunks of trees in order to smoke out the bees, making it easier to collect the honey) are perhaps more likely to blame.

For a concise and excellent editorial comment on the matter, foillow this link to the Tanzania Standard News website article.
