Climber involved in Western Breach tragedy returns to Kilimanjaro

Monday 18th June 2007

I have just found out that two of the climbers who survived the rockfall on Kilimanjaro’s Western Breach route that killed three of their fellow climbers has since returned to the mountain to climb it.

Jessica Post of Eldorado Springs, a 19-year-old sophomore at the University of Colorado, was severely injured in the rockfall that left her with a shattered femur that requiried reconstructive surgery as well as six months of recuperation. Yet despite the trauma, just one year after the accident, which led to the closure of the Western Breach Route, she revisited the mountain in January of this year with her father, who also survived the tragedy. Together they succeeded in reaching the summit on the Marangu Route. Amazingly, they used the same guides who took them up last time - one of whom, Sharif Bakari, the main guide, hadn’t climbed the mountain since.
