Banker cycles to Kilimanjaro for charity

Wednesday 5th September 2007

A former investment banker from South Africa has arrived in Moshi following a two-month cycle ride from his home in Johannesburg to Kilimanjaro. Thabang Skwambane, 31, now executive director of Kaelo, an HIV/AIDS and Wellness company, set out on his marathon journey to raise awareness and funds for orphans and vulnerable children in South Africa.

The journey has been dubbed ‘The Lonely Road’, and the charity Thabang founded and has been collecting for has been named The Lonely Road Foundation. His journey took him 5458km through South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania and included 179km by foot, 165km by vehicle, and the rest in the saddle. Nor is Thabang finishing there: today (5th September) he will climb to the Roof of Africa with the trekking agent Wild Frontiers , arriving in a week’s time.

To keep up to date with Thabang’s climb or make a donation, visit the Lonely Road website.
