Giant peace doves to appear on summit of Kilimanjaro

Wednesday 12th September 2007

On 21st September eight volunteers – five from Tanzania, three ‘international’ - will set off to climb Kilimanjaro in order to raise money for the charity Roots & Shoots. Their goal is to raise US$30,000 for the Lugufu Refugee Camp, home to over 35,000 refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Not only will the eight climbers be aiming for the summit but they also hope to carry giant ‘Peace Doves’, which they hope to display on the summit. The group will be tracked the entire way and, all being well, will photograph the doves from above

Roots and Shoots was originally set up by Dr Jane Goodall to ‘foster respect and compassion for all living things, promote understanding of all cultures and beliefs, and inspire each individual to take action to make the world a better place for people, animals and the environment’. From just 16 Tanzanians, the chariy now has a presence in over 100 countries and has almost 9000 active clubs.

In addition to sponsorship, the group is also urgently looking for any unwanted trekking gear to give to the climbers. So if you are in the Kilimanjaro area and have finished your climb, consider donating your stuff to them. Contact peaceclimb2007@gmail.com if you are interested in donating equipment or clothing.
