Mobile phone coverage on Kilimanjaro

Saturday 29th September 2007
In response to enquiries from several readers, I can confirm that mobile phone reception is generally pretty good on the mountain – including the summit! There are patches, of course, where you will be out of range, with the early stages of the Lemosho/Shira and Rongai routes in particular notorious for their lack of coverage. But considering the mountain is a national park filled with untamed wilderness, it’s actually surprising how good the coverage is; but then again, given the size of Kilimanjaro, and the way it towers over everything else on the continent, maybe it’s not so surprising!

A more important factor as to whether you will be able to communicate with civilization from the mountain is the weather conditions, with cloud cover and fog both said to impede mobile communication. But given a charged battery and a – literally – fair wind, there’s no reason why you can’t phone your friends at 5am (or 3am in the UK) to tell them you’re standing at the highest point in Africa!
