Assistant guides in scramble for licences

Friday 5th October 2007
The Kilimanjaro National Parks Authority (KINAPA) have confirmed to me that they insist that all assistant guides who work on the mountain should be fully licensed, in addition to the guides who actually lead the treks.

According to reports, if a client is trekking solo, then only license is needed for the party, while for 3-7 clients two licences are required. If the group consists of 8-13 climbers, the figure rises to three licences – and so on.

Apparently, this rule has been in force for a few years, but it’s only now that KINAPA have tried to enforce it – and while they are not stopping treks with an insufficient number of guide licences, some agencies and have been reprimanded recently for sending up crews do not hold the correct number of licences.

To the average trekker this will mean very little, for your agency sorts out your crew and it is their job to check on the guides’ qualifications.
