Dare you take the 2008 Kiliman challenge?

Thursday 25th October 2007

It is now possible to register for the 2008 Kiliman Challenge. This gruelling event is a triathlon of sorts, beginning with a climb up to the summit of Kilimanjaro (which, for entirely sensible safety reasons, is the only section that is not a race). Those who successfully reach the summit can then race in the other two events, which consist of a two-day, 246km bike ride around the foot of Kilimanjaro followed by a marathon from Moshi up the slopes of Kili and back down again. The challenge will take place from 21st February to the 3rd March 2008 and places are strictly limited to 60 competitors. However, even if you do not manage to get a place in the Kiliman challenge, it is possible to sign up only for individual events (eg just the marathon, or just the bike ride). Team events are also available.

Last year’s winner, 41-year-old Michael Kruse from Germany, recorded a time of 13 hours 53 minutes and 55 seconds for the bike ride and marathon combined - which gives you some idea of what you’re up against! The winner of the ladies race was Marlene Houmark of Denmark, who won in a time of 18 hours 35 minutes 47 seconds.

The cost of the entire challenge is US$2575 though this includes accommodation, park fees, meals and other services. There are separate prices for each of the events, starting at US$400 for the marathon only.

The last day for registration for the challenge is 10th January 2008.

The event is being organised this year by Chagga Tours. To sign up or read more about each of the events, follow this link to the Kiliman Challenge website.
