Look who made it to the top of Kilimanjaro this week!

November 23rd 2007.
A new website – and the news so many Kilimanjaro lovers have been
waiting to hear has finally arrived too. KINAPA have confirmed that they are planning
to reopen Kilimanjaro’s Western Breach Route! The hardest, or at least steepest route
to the summit, the Western Breach was closed in January 2006 following the deaths
of three trekkers in a rockfall. Though rumours have abounded that the route may
soon reopen, those rumours have, until now, proved unfounded.
The grand opening is
due to happen on the 1st December but at the moment, many trekking agencies are delaying
taking bookings on the route until they know exactly what rules KINAPA (the Kilimanjaro
National Park Authorities) are going to specify before allowing trekkers back on
the path. For example, there have been suggestions that all trekkers are equipped
with a hard hat and other safety gear if they wish to use the route.
No doubt details
of exactly what KINAPA have in mind for the Western Breach will emerge over the coming
weeks and months – we’ll keep you informed as soon as we hear of anything.
