World AIDS day observed in Arusha

According to a report in the Arusha Times, over 3% of residents
who volunteered for a HIV test between September and November of this year as part
of World Aids Day were found to be carrying the virus.
Although the local authorities
in Arusha were aiming to test 160,000 of its inhabitants in the run up to World Aids
Day, which took place last Saturday Arusha, in the end only just over 85,000 took
part. Of those, 2309 tested positive for the virus.
The figure of 3% is considerably
lower than the national average, which studies say is somewhere in the region of
6% in Tanzania. This figure, however, is widely believed to be artificially low,
probably due to the fact that the type of person who would volunteer for such a test
in the run-
