77-year-old woman reaches summit of Kilimanjaro!
January 8th 2008.

The Oakville Beaver - a newspaper without which no week is complete - recently carried a story of Canadian Ann Windh, from Bronte, Ontario, who at 77 became, at 10am on October 11th 2007, possibly the oldest woman ever to climb the mountain.

While she is still awaiting confirmation from the Guinness Book of Records that she has, in fact, broken the record (an insitution which, as regular readers will know, I don't put a great deal of store by, as they've consistently ignored justifiable and verifiable claims from people claiming to be the oldest person to scale the mountain, and who also refused to verify Bern Goosen's first wheelchair climb to the summit), Ms Windh claims that she didn't do it for the record in any case. She just fancied a challenge.

And the reason why she has waited until her 78th year before accepting the challenge? Well Ms Windh puts it down to the fact that, up until the break-up of her marriage 12 years ago, she led a sheltered existence as a housewife, raising three children.

To train for the climb, Ann visited a gym religiously three times a week, and climbed the steps of her 11th story building twice a day.

We do, of course, congratulate Ann on her remarkable achievement.
