Look who made it to the top of Kilimanjaro this week!

January 11th 2008.
Africa has been the continent that has been the hardest hit by the AIDS epidemic; Tanzania has been one of the worst effected countries on that continent; and the Kilimanjaro region has the highest incidence rate of AIDS in Tanzania.
It is for this reason that the Treasures of Africa Children’s Home was established by the American charity Hidden With Christ Ministries in March 2007. The home sits in the heart of the Kilimanjaro region, in Moshi, in the shadow of the mountain.
The home takes in and looks after children who have been orphaned as a result of the disease, and who as a result are looking for the basic human needs of food and shelter.
UNICEF currently estimate that there are over 2 million such orphans in the country. So while many from the West may feel slightly uncomfortable about the overtly Christian teaching and ethos of the orphanage, it cannot be disputed that the work of orphanages such as these is vital.
I will be visiting the orphanage myself this summer as part of my research trip for the third edition of the guide. I will be able to supply a more complete review of the work that the orphanage does. But in the meantime you can find out more about their work by visiting the Treasures of Africa website at www.treasuresofafrica.org.
