The 2008 ‘Unique Rongai’ treks
For 2008 we will be running six treks on our newly devised Unique Rongai Route. The
route has been constructed following years of climbing Kilimanjaro and offers the
very best that the mountain has to offer.
What’s so special about this new route?
This new, Unique Rongai Route is unusual in that it combines sections of the Rongai
Route plus two other trails. In addition, it takes trekkers along parts of the mountain
that are not visited by other trails at all; indeed, there is even one section where
there is no path at all.
So why has this new route been devised? Well, in our experience when trekkers climb
Kilimanjaro, they do so for a number of reasons; the chance to see some local wildlife
in its native habitat, for example, or to spend some time away from the crowds and
appreciate the best that the mountain has to offer, from superlative views to a real
sense of adventure and exploration.
And we think we've come up with a route that combines all of these wishes. For on
our Unique Rongai treks you get:
- The best opportunity of viewing wildlife By beginning on the northern side of the
mountain, adjacent to Kenya’s Amboseli National Park, our trekkers have the best
chance of seeing some of the African wildlife that live in Kilimanjaro's shadow –
elephant, buffalo, leopard, antelope and monkey.
- The chance to get away from the crowds Whilst we are obliged by KINAPA to follow
the established trails for most of the trek, our unique route also takes us on paths
that seldom see trekkers - as well as sections of the mountain where there isn't
a path at all! No other route on the mountain offers this level of tranquillity.
- The chance to see the whole mountain - and get the best views With our route going
from north to south across Kilimanjaro, you’ll be able to see much more of the mountain
than most trekkers, including such features as Mawenzi (Kili’s second peak), the
desert lands of the Saddle and, of course, the Kibo summit and Uhuru Peak – the highest
point in Africa!
- The chance to walk during the full moon. On our unique Rongai treks, we have arranged
it so that your time on the summit will coincide with the full moon.
- The best chance of reaching the summit Unlike existing routes on the northern side
of Kilimanjaro, our route follows the old climbers’ maxim of ‘climb high, sleep low’.
This aids acclimatization, helping trekkers to deal with the effects of altitude
– which in turn increases your chances of reaching the top! When you book a trek
with us, we shall provide you with further details as to how we feel this is the
safest - and potentially the most successful - route on the mountain
- The best crew and some great equipment. Thanks to the extensive research that we
do for the book ,we are sure that the best guides and crew working on the mountain.
They also have the best equipment and trekking gear for hire, much of it made in
Nepal by the same company that equips Everest expeditions. Furthermore, I will be
handpicking the local guides from amongst the best currently working on the mountain,
including one with more than 25 years experience on Kilimanjaro, and another who
was awarded the title of 'Guide of the Millennium' by KINAPA.
In addition to the above, you also get all the advantages that booking with Climb
Mount Kilimanjaro brings:
- Unique opportunities to vary the trek and explore the mountain With at least two
guides (myself and one or more local guides) accompanying every group, we can offer
a much more flexible itinerary than other companies. For example, if after reaching
Uhuru Peak some people wish to sleep at the summit, whilst others wish to return
to base camp, both parties can be accommodated.
- An exemplary ethical policy Our policy towards both our crew and the natural environment
of Kilimanjaro is amongst the best on the mountain. Follow this link to see our ethical
policy.
- Our unparalleled knowledge of the mountain We did, after all, write the book...
- Great hotels By using only hotels that we recommend in the book, you know that everywhere
you’ll stay has been chosen because we genuinely like them – rather than because
they offer the best deals for the agents.
- Great dining During our research, we ate in every restaurant and drank in every bar.
It’s that knowledge that we can now use to ensure that you enjoy the best food (and
drink the finest beer!) that the region has to offer.
- A chance to see a different side to Tanzania We can also offer plenty of things to
do when we’re not on the mountain, from shopping to sightseeing, meeting the locals
in their homes to enjoying a picnic by a waterfall.
- Peace of mind from the moment you arrive Our package also includes transfers to and
from Kilimanjaro International Airport - so our responsibility for you starts the
moment you clear customs.
The itinerary of the Unique Rongai Route
In order to prevent other agencies from prying, we have decided not to print a detailed
itinerary of the route online. However, when you book a trek on the Unique Rongai
Route you will receive a detailed day-to-day itinerary of the route as well as a
map of the path.
What to do next...
Perhaps the first thing to do is read our list of Frequently Asked Questions, which
will hopefully answer any enquiries you may have about our climb. You may also wish
to read our Ethical policy, which will tell you all about the level of care we show
towards our Kilimanjaro porters and guides as well as our care for the environment
of Kilimanjaro.
After this, peruse our Trekking dates, which shows our climbing schedule for 2008,
and find a climb that is suitable for you. Once you have settled upon a date, go
to the how to book page to secure a place. And that’s it: there’s no need to send
any money now - your place is already booked for the greatest adventure of your
life!
