The overwhelming majority of trekkers book their Kilimanjaro climb before they arrive
in Tanzania, either through an agency in their home country or, usually via the internet,
with an agency in Tanzania or abroad. This is only sensible – you will have enough
on your plate once you get to Tanzania just trying to get to the top of Africa’s
highest mountain without having to sort out the whole trek beforehand as well.
Booking
your Kilimanjaro trek from home gets rid of the hassle. It depends what kind of package
you have booked, of course, but few tour companies will sell you a climb up Kilimanjaro
and nothing more. Nearly all will include in their Kilimanjaro package such things
as airport pick-
With no need to arrange these things yourself, booking your Kilimanjaro trek from home will save you a considerable amount of time. It also ensures that you know exactly when you’ll be walking on Kilimanjaro, rather than having to wait around for a few days, as you may have to if you wait until booking in Tanzania. Booking your Kilimanjaro trek from an agency in your country also means you can plan your trek more precisely months in advance, and ask your agent any questions you may have well before you even arrive in Tanzania. Your agency at home will also either have their own guide to lead you up Kilimanjaro or, more probably, will be acting on behalf of one of the larger and better trekking operators in Moshi/Arusha, providing you with peace of mind. (Where possible, we have tried to find out exactly which Kilimanjaro trekking agency in Tanzania they use, so you can look them up and read a review of them in the book too.)
And if the trek still turns out to be a disaster, then the big advantage of booking your Kilimanjaro trek from home is that you have a lot more comeback and a lot more chance of receiving some sort of compensation.
