About Henry

I am a little obsessed with Mount Kilimanjaro. Since writing the first edition of the Kilimanjaro guide in 2001 I have climbed the mountain more than 30 times and occasionally leads treks up the mountain myself. And when I'm not in Tanzania researaching for the next edition of the guide (the sixth edition was published in 2024), I can be found living near Hastings, England, updating this website (which was first published in 2006), writing about the national trails of England, answering Kili-related emails and putting on weight. Friends describe me as living proof that virtually anybody can climb Kilimanjaro.

First wedding performed on top of Kilimanjaro

It finally happened. Earlier this month Dustin Smoot & Stacy M Allee were married on top of Africa's highest mountain, Kilimanjaro.  Joshua Ruhimbi, one of our fellow directors at Kilimanjaro Experts and one of the most experienced guides operating on the mountain, was there to witness the occasion and guide the participants, as well [...]

The Serengeti migration: how to track the wildebeest

If you're going to the Serengeti, you're going because you want to see the wildebeest migration. After all, the park was established precisely to protect the 'circuit' that the wildebeest follow each year. The wildebeest trace this clockwise route, of course, in order to graze on the best pasture. While few people go on [...]

Amputee team to climb Kilimanjaro

So you don't think you've got what it takes, physically, to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro? Check out these individuals from the San Antonio Amputee Foundation, all climbing Africa's HIghest Mountain in December this year (with film crew in tow) to show the world what's possible if you put your mind to it: https://www.ksat.com/content/pns/ksat/news/2015/04/16/team-of-amputees-preparing-for-kilimanjaro-summit.html [...]

Base-jumping from Kilimanjaro!

Morning everyone - here's another in our occasional series of people getting to the top of ‪#‎Kilimanjaro - or in this case, getting off it - in unusual ways. Here we have 50-year-old Russian Valery Rozov making the first ever base jump from the top of the Western Breach Wall, on the lip of [...]
